My Words & Poems

Message in Da Music

I’m Abena, a RE~Covering Afreekan enslaved in amerikkka and a RE~Presentative from the Voices in the Margins.

I am fed the flip up with being forced to practice and uphold European thinking and behaving in the world. I am fed up with the notion white as "right" and I am sick and tired of having to nurture, feed and support the European Asili. I have been rubbed RAW by white folk and they shit. YES, I said SHIT! When I do so, I am paraphrasing the primary purpose laid out by Narrative Family Theorist Epson and White (1990). They contend that family interactions if and when problematic, result from the faulty stories they are living. They advocate an approach of “externalizing the stinky poo” (pg. 38) to support change and health in the family system.

White, M & Epston. D. 1990, Narrative Means to Therapeutic Ends.

Put in the culturally linguistic style of one living in the “margins”, who was taught to “call a spade a spade”, I say SHIT. This linguistic style is also used to convey the feeling associated with these thoughts. I am MAD as all get out and, as a former “client” of mental health services, I learned well how to identify and appropriately express my feelings. I also strive to practice what I preach and teach.

I recognize that our enslavement to European culture as a process of rubbing the “black” off of us. In it’s place, is pink and white representing the blood and body that’s been dragged in such a way as to scrap off the skin….and…..

I’m R.A.W.

Ready Able Willing

To tell my Story
my way.

The TRUTH, the whole TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH
of my EXPERIENCES, STRENGHTS AND PLANS
for RE~Covering my TRUE Cultural Story.
I am Ready, Willing and Able to do so;
with your help.
It is a story of great pain and shame.
It is also a story filled with triumph,
laughter and GROWTH.
